The Girrwaa Duguula (People Together) choir, founded by Gumbaynggirr elder Michael “Micklo” Jarrett, offers a unique opportunity for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants to learn and sing in the Gumbaynggirr language. Meeting weekly on the New South Wales mid-north coast, the choir blends traditional and contemporary songs to revitalize the language and foster community connections. With members ranging from schoolchildren to elders, the choir also employs Indigenous musicians, supporting local artists. Uncle Micklo hopes to further strengthen the Gumbaynggirr language and its everyday use. The choir has been described as a healing and confidence-building experience, offering a meaningful way to engage with Indigenous culture.
